X-Games Aspen Day 1: Part II


After the Snowboard Slopestyle Elimination round earlier in the day, the Snowmobile Freestyle Final and the men's Snowboard SuperPipe Elimination certainly had some fireworks to cap off a great day in Aspen, Colorado.

In Snowmobile Freestyle, Caleb Moore in his first run under-rotated on an attempted backflip indian air, having his snowmobile's skis dig in the snow and struck him on the way down.

Moore got up and walked under his own power but had sustained a concussion and left Buttermilk Mountain to Aspen Valley medical center for further evaluation.

Defending gold-medalist Colten Moore also slammed in his first run from the same hit on the double-double section where his brother Caleb suffered a concussion. Moore was crooked going into the hit and over-rotated, landing on his right side. Colten was also transferred to the Aspen Valley medical center on a gurney with what is estimated to be a right hip injury.

Joe Parsons, a 9-time medalist in X-Games snowmobile events, had a tremendous first run utilizing his signature "gator wrassler" (A backflip body wrap with a kiss of death mixed in) and scored an 88.66.

Levi Lavalle sat in second place at 86.67 going into his last run. With Parsons to beat, he started off with a no-handed backflip on the 90-footer. Lavalle had a huge kiss of death backflip, torquing his snowmobile and scored an 89.00 to put himself ahead of Parsons, winning the gold medal.

"I was so dang nervous." Lavalle said. "I just put down a solid run and it just worked out. Just to be able to come back to X-Games to compete is just a dream."


Daniel Bodin crashed the same way Caleb did, totaling his snowmobile and was unable to take his last run, finishing fourth. 

"I'm fine. I just (expletive) up." After being interviewed following the first run.  


 And three-time X-Games medalist Justin Hoyer, who won gold in freestyle in 2010, finished with the bronze medal.

In snowboard SuperPipe, the top eight best scores would qualify for the final on Sunday.

Shaun White started strong unlike his performance in slopestyle, scoring an 87.00 his first run. But on his second he simply rode down the hill, securing his spot in second place for the final.

White for the first time in years will not drop last in the final. It will be Swiss rider Iouri Podladtchikov, who scored an 87.33 to have the honors of dropping last. If Podladtchikov wins, It would break White's six consecutive gold medal streak on the SuperPipe at X.

Scotty Lago after bailing on his first go, responded with a double nosegrab frontside 900 along with a double-tweak stalefish 540 to not only bump Luke Mitrani out, but moved up to third place at the end of the night with an 82.66.

For 14-year old Ayumu Hirano, the rookie finished sixth on his second run to the tune of a double cork truck-driver (grabbing both sides of the board) on his last hit to clinch a full-pull for the youngster.

Other riders who made the final include Markus Malin, Matt Ladley, Christian Haller and Louie Vito finishing eighth.

So here is the pecking order for Sunday's Men's SuperPipe Final.

2) White
3) Lago
4) Malin
5) Ladley
6) Hirano
7) Haller
8) Vito

R.I.P MCA/Bisons Game

   Yesterday  of course was a very sad day for not only myself, but for millions of people across the world.     The gravelly-voiced, and beloved hip hop pioneer from Brooklyn, NY has left us. Adam Yauch, aka "MCA" from the legendary hip hop group Beastie Boys, passed away today at the age of 47 after a three year battle with cancer. Yauch along with Michael Diamond (Mike D) formed the Beastie Boys in 1981, playing their first show on Yauch's 17th birthday.     The Beastie Boys were originally a punk band comprised of Yauch, Diamond, Kate Schellenbach, and John Berry. As Berry and Schellenbach left the band, Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) joined up and released their first album Licensed To Ill in 1986. 40 million albums later, the group still continued to tour until Yauch was unable to perform after being diagnosed with cancer in his salivary gland in 2009.     In honor of Yauch, the New York Mets used cuts from the Beastie ...

Recap Of Buffalo State Softball Tournament

Today, my radio station 91.3FM WBNY participated in the annual Buffalo State softball tournament at Bengal Field. Our team name this year was Dump Em' Out, inspired by former play by play for Buffalo State men's hockey Kory Reid (Dump em' out refers to women who, well you get the idea). WBNY's first game concluded in a 14-4 victory over the Bradley Bombers. This is the second victory for the radio station in organization athletics. It was a great experience being able to play with fellow DJ's, and actually win a game! Unfortunately our run came to a rather familiar halt. Losing 15-0 to the Poles & Holes (Really?) But the feeling of winning a game was satisfying enough that it somewhat healed the pain of getting thrashed the way we did.  Among other notes, summer vacation is drawing near and I am on my way to begin interning with WGR Sports Radio 550AM!
